Osteoarthritis is often treated as a one-way path, one that leads to lifelong medication, pain management, and giving up the activities we love. But what if we could change the trajectory? Chris’s journey shows us exactly that.
Chris’s history with Osteoarthritis
In May 2024, Chris came to us referred by his sports therapist. At 54, he was dealing with confirmed osteoarthritis and a strong family history of joint degeneration. Staying active was becoming harder. Pain and inflammation were creeping into daily life.
Body composition testing revealed Chris was holding around 25kg of fat mass, with a fat mass index of 7.5, well above optimal ranges. Visceral fat measured 4.3 litres, and waist circumference exceeded 110 cm. These values posed a risk not only to joint health but also to long-term cardiometabolic health.
But Chris was clear, he did not want rigid dieting or extreme regimens. He wanted a sustainable way of eating and living that helped him feel younger, move freely, and enjoy life.
Using Functional Medicine to improve Osteoarthritis
Over the first 8 months (phase 1), we focused on:
- Reducing inflammatory drivers through dietary change
- Improving sleep, digestion and energy balance
- Continuing his mobility-supportive physical activity
- Reframing nutrition habits around enjoyment, not restriction
This phase created stability and early improvements. But we knew he had more to give.
Breakthrough Results
In the 5 months that followed, Chris committed to a more targeted programme. With careful coaching, consistency, and progress tracking, the changes were striking:
- Fat mass dropped from 24.87kg to 9.85kg
- Visceral fat fell from 4.3L to 1.3L
- Waist circumference reduced by 16cm
- Phase angle, a marker of cellular health, improved from 6.8° to 7.1°
All while increasing muscle mass and maintaining hydration levels.

Real world benefits
More importantly…
- Chris is now pain-free
- He is enjoying sport again
- His inflammatory medication is being tapered
- He feels physically and mentally younger than he has in years
Why This Matters
Chris’s case reminds us that osteoarthritis does not need to be a life sentence. When we support the body through nutrition, movement, and metabolic health strategies, the body often responds better than we expect.
We did not treat his osteoarthritis directly; we addressed the environment that was aggravating it. And that made all the difference.
Takeaway Message: Age is not a barrier. Chronic conditions are not fixed endpoints. There is always potential for improvement when the right plan is in place.
